HYNEK MARTINEC: A VOYAGE TO ICELAND

The set of pictures by Hynek Martinec, a Czech artist based in London, is an illustration of the conceptually formulated game based on a fictive story to build a Baroque cathedral in Iceland in the first half of the 18th century. K. I. Dientzenhofer did not build a cathedral there, yet allegedly preserved set of pictures, which should have decorated the cathedral, is put on display at this exhibition. Approx. 30 pictures and drawings are thematically related with many works from the Baroque collection of the National Gallery in Prague. Martinec´ reinterpretations and paraphrases lead to reviewing of the models and reflection about position of contemporary painting and role of the context.

JIŘÍ KOLÁŘ: THE GRIMACE OF THE CENTURY

Jiří Kolář is one of the most significant Czech fine artists of the second half of the 20th century. He launched his artistic career as autodidact, poet and translator. The exhibition presents a selection of his poetry and fine art works which unveil how unorthodoxically he was able to formulate his opinion on the world. One of the important exhibits is the Diary 1968 – a series of 60 collages which map the dramatical history of that years. This will be accompanied by some almost unknown pieces; some of them are from the National Gallery in Prague, other ones from the Museum Kampa, the Neues Museum Nürnberg and other private collections.

DON GIOVANNI 2018

In the summer of 2018, the Estates Theatre will host performances of the legendary Don Giovanni production directed by Václav Kašlík, which had its premiere in 1969.
Costumes by the Oscar winning Theodor Pištěk; the sets, designed by the father of Laterna Magica Josef Svoboda, inventively encompass the architectural elements of the auditorium itself, integrating the proscenium boxes as the main component of the scenery, and thus capitalising on the fact that the Estates Theatre was the venue of the world premiere of the “Opera of Operas”. The opening night, on 29 October 1787, was conducted by the composer himself.
