Room Service: Hotel Josef, Prague

Newly opened and built around a simple COURTYARD, the 110-room Hotel Josef (Rybna 20; 00420 221 700 111; www.hoteljosef.com) was designed by London-based Czech Eva Jiricna (best known for her designs incorporating glass and steel). The Josef has been designed as a stunning modern contrast to Prague's beautiful historical buildings.

Modern it certainly is, but the service goes back to the good old days. Breakfast is served in a bright room, the decor again leaning heavily on glass and steel with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the COURTYARD. There is even a gym on the top floor of one wing.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

Very centrally located on a quiet street about five minutes' walk from Republic Square, and not much further from the Old Town Square, the hotel is also very convenient for Josefov, the old Jewish Quarter. Wenceslas Square or the Charles Bridge can be reached on foot in less than 15 minutes.

Time to international airport: See Down Payment, above.

ARE YOU LYING COMFORTABLY?

The bedrooms are unfussy, with simple decor in neutral colours, bright bed coverings providing a colourful contrast. All rooms have 30-channel satellite TV, DVD-CD player, minibar and hairdryer. Superior rooms all have stunning glass bathrooms: glass basins, frosted-glass showers and loo doors, with mirrors everywhere. If you prefer to keep some secrets from your partner, opt for a Standard (with conventional bathrooms, shower or bath).

Freebies: City maps and the usual toiletries. Sumptuous buffet breakfast.

Keeping in touch: All rooms have a phone and ISDN, and the hotel has a small business.
