The Hotel Josef is situated in the center of Prague's old town, at the confluence of three streets. The proposal to make a modern architectural intervention in the city's historic quarter was a challenge that demanded special respect when it came to blending in the old and new.
The hotel comprises two buildings linked by a courtyard. The architects confined the public areas - the reception, dining and conference rooms - to the basement and ground floor, leaving the remainder for the 110 rooms. The main entrance was conceived as a peaceful, monochrome space in which flowers and objects are set in such a way that they set up different atmospheres. The dining room evokes the era of Czech Modernism in the 1930s. The bedrooms are designed to provide maximum comfort within fixed spatial conditions, although some are enlarged by the incorporation of bathrooms with glass screens and mirrors on the doors that reflect the exterior and add another dimension to the interior. The rooms on the upper floors also boast terraces that offer splendid views of the city.
This hotel stands out for not only its contemporary design but also its architectural ingenuity, which has managed to take full advantage of light and form within restrictive spatial demands.
